Neurons Flashcards
Dendrites
Transfer electrical impulse signals from the cell body to the synapse
Nucleus
Contains cells DNA
Soma
The cell body which contains most of the cells organelles
Axon
Sends electrical impulses to neighbouring neurons
Myelin sheaths
Cover the axon and works like insulation to help keep electrical signals, allowing axons to move more quickly
Synapses
Receive electrical impulses from neighbouring neurons
Sensory neurons
Found in receptors such as eyes, ears, tongue and skin, carry nerve impulses to the spinal cord and brain.
These are then translated to sensations
Relay neurons
Found between sensory input and motor output response.
-found in the brain and allow sensory and motor neurons to communicate
Motor neurons
Found in CNS and control muscle movements.
When motor neurons are stimulated they release neurotransmitters that bind receptors on muscles to trigger a response.
