Endocrine system Flashcards
define hormone
chemical substances that help to regulate processes in the body. Hormones are secreted by glands and travel to their targeted organs in the blood system
define gland
organ which produces and releases substances that perform a specific function in the body.
endocrine glands release hormones that they make directly into the blood stream
role of pituitary gland
- stimulates the adrenal cortex and release of cortisol in stress response
- responsible for uterus contractions during child birth
role of adrenal gland
- adrenal medula is responsible for releasing adrenaline and noradrenaline (key in fight or flight)
- adrenal cortex releases cortisol, stimulates release of glucose to provide body with energy
role of ovaries
release oestrogen which controls the regulation of the female reproductive system including menstrual cycle and pregnancy
positive of endocrine system
pituitary gland has special receptors that monitor levels of cortisol in blood.
- they respond to an increase of cortisol by reducing secretions of CRF
- returns body back to normal level of cortisol
- limits danger 2 the body :)
negative of endocrine system
research has found that when an individual is exposed to high amounts of stress, there is an adverse affect on the endocrine system/
so more stress = more stress related illness
