The Nervous System Flashcards
What is the CNS composer of?
The Brain and Spinal Cord
What makes up the Peripheral nervous system?
All the nerve tissue not in the CNS
Spinal nerves
Cranial nerves
Autonomic nerves
What do dendrites do?
They increase the cell body area. They receive information from other neurons and bring them to the body for processing.
What is the Axon/Nerve Fibre?
Longest process from the body. Electrical wire that carries action potential from one Neurone to the next.
What are bundles of axons called?
Nerve (PNS)
Tract (CNS)
What is the myelin sheath?
It is an electrical insulator covering bundles of axons.
What does the brain consist of?
Gyri (folds) and Sulci (grooves)
What are the 4 lives of each cerebral hemisphere?
Occipital, Parietal, Temporal and Frontal Lobe
What is Cranial Nerve I?
The olfactory nerve.
What is Cranial Nerve II?
The optic nerve.
What is Cranial Nerve III?
Oculomotor Nerve.
What is Cranial Nerve IV?
Trochlear Nerve
What is Cranial Nerve V?
The Trigeminal Nerve
What is Cranial Nerve VI?
Abducent Nerve
What is Cranial Nerve VII?
Facial Nerve
What is Cranial Nerve VIII?
Vestibulocochlear nerve
What is Cranial Nerve IX?
Glossopharyngeal nerve
What is Cranial Nerve X?
Vagus Nerve
What is Cranial Nerve XI?
Spinal Accessory Nerve
What is Cranial Nerve XII?
Hypoglossal Nerve
How are spinal nerves named?
According to the vertebrae below
Where do the spinal cords come out to reach the body?
Intervertebral foraminae
Where does the spinal cord pass through when leaving the brain?
Foramen Magnum
What are the 4 segments of the spinal cord?
Cervical
Thoracic
Lumbar
Sacral/Coccygeal
How many pairs of spinal nerves are there?
31
At which vertebral level does the spinal cord end?
L1/L2
What is the name of the end of the spinal cord?
Conus Medullaris
What is the extension of the lumbar and sacral nerve roots of the spinal cord called?
Cauda Equina
What do the spinal nerves supply?
The body wall
Where are the spinal nerves located?
Only within the Intervertebral Foraminae.
What do the spinal nerves connect with?
Structures of the Soma (via rami)
The spinal cord (via roots and rootlets)
What is a Dermatome?
Strip of skin supplied by both the anterior and posterior rami of the spinal nerves.
Where is the male nipple located?
T4 Dermatome
Where is the umbilicus located?
T10 Dermatome
What are plexuses?
Networks of intertwined anterior rami.
What does the cervical plexus supply?
Posterior scalp
Neck wall
Diaphragm
What does the brachial plexus supply?
The upper limb
What does the lumbar plexus supply?
The lower limb
What does the Sacral
Plexus supply?
The lower limb
Gluteal region
Perineum
In the brachial plexus, what are the 5 names nerves which supply the upper limb?
Axillary Median Musculocutaneous Radial Ulnar
Where do the sympathetic nerves exit the spinal cord?
T1-L2 spinal nerves
What is the outflow of the parasympathetic axons?
Craniosacral
What nervous system deals with the external environment?
Somatic nervous system
What does the autonomic nervous system do?
Deals with the internal environment
Where is the autonomic nervous system located?
Internal organs within body cavities and body wall organs
What is Motor (efferent)?
Action potential towards the body wall, body cavity or organ
What is Sensory (afferent)?
Action potentials towards the brain
What is a nerve?
Bundles of axons (nerve fibres) wrapped in connective tissue
