Circulatory System Flashcards
What is the circulatory system composed of?
Cardiovascular system
Lymphatic system
What is the cardiovascular system composed of?
Pulmonary and systemic circulation
What are the Great Vessels?
Vessels directly connected to the heart chambers
What is contained in a NVB?
Artery
Vein
Nerve
What is an anastomosis?
Connection between arteries without a capillary network in between?
Example of an anastomosis?
Circle of Willis
Limb joints
What is an end artery?
Only arterial blood supply to a particular area
Example of an end artery?
Central artery if retina
Digital
Coronary
What is sympathetic tone (tonus)?
Constant low level contraction of smooth muscle
What are the 4 parts of the Aorta?
Ascending
Arch
Thoracic
Abdominal
What are the 3 branches of the arch of the aorta?
Brachiocephalic trunk (right common carotid and right subclavian)
Left common carotid
Left subclavian
What does the common carotid bifurcate into?
External carotid
Internal carotid
What does the carotid sinus do?
Detects changes in arterial BP
What does the carotid body do?
Detects blood gas levels and pH
What Cranial Nerve inervates the carotid sinus and carotid body?
Glossopharyngeal Nerve
CNIX
What arteries supply the brain?
Internal carotid
Vertebral artery
Through what route does the carotid artery reach the brain?
Via the Carotid canal
How does the vertebral artery reach the brain?
Through the foramen magnum
What forms the Basilar artery?
The left and right vertebral artery
What aspect of the brain is the circle of Willis
Inferior aspect
What does the Abdominal Aorta bifurcate into?
The common iliac arteries
What do the common iliac arteries supply?
The pelvis
Perineum
Lower limbs
What do the common iliacs bifurcate into?
Internal iliac artery
External iliac artery
What does the internal iliac artery supply?
Pelvis
Perineum
What does the external iliac artery supply?
Lower limb
What pulses is in the neck?
Carotid pulse
What are the pulses in the upper limb?
Brachial pulse
Radial pulse
What are the pulses of the lower limb?
Femoral
Popliteal
Posterior tibial
Dorsalis Pedis
What pumps the venous blood back towards the heart?
Skeletal muscle pump
Venous valves
Pressure changes in the chest cavity due to breathing
What are the 2 sets of veins?
Superficial
Deep
Where do the superficial veins run?
Superficial fascia
Where do the deep veins run?
Deep fascia
What are the 2 main venous systems?
Hepatic portal venous system
Systemic venous system
What does the hepatic portal venous system do?
Drains venous blood from the absorptive parts of the GI tract and associated organs to the liver for cleaning.
What does the systemic venous system do?
Drains venous blood from all other organs and tissues to the SVC of IVC.
What do lymph nodes contain?
WBCs to filter fluid and fight infection
Where is lymph drained into?
The central veins at the root of the neck at the venous angles.
Where does the upper right quadrant lymph drain into?
The right venous angle via the right lymphatic duct
Where does the rest of the body’s lymph drain into?
The left venous angle via the thoracic duct
