Q

Main differences between hormonal and nervous reaction

A

Hormonal control

  • slow
  • travel with blood
  • go to whole body

Nervous control

  • fast
  • travel via nerves
  • go to specific organ

Q

What is an effector and an example

A

An effector is the muscle or gland that is targeted in a nervous response. Effector is muscle in the eyelid when u blink when in contact with dust

Q

Job of relay neurone

A

Passes info within central nervous system. These are used in reflex reactions to pass info straight from a sensory neurone to a motor neurone, bypassing the brain

Q

What does the nervous system and hormones enable us to do

A

Respond to external changes. Help control conditions in our body. Hormones are used in forms of contraception. Plants also produce hormones like auxin and respond to external stimuli

Q

What are receptors and what do they detect

A

Detect changes in the environment. Receptors in eyes sensitive to light. Receptors in ears sensitive to sound. Receptors in ears that are sensitive to changes in position and enable us to keep our balance.receptors in nose and tongue sensitive to chemicals and enable us to taste and smell. Receptors in skin that are sensitive to touch, pressure, pain and to temperature changes.

Q

How is information passed through the nervous system

A

Information from receptors passes along cells (neurones) in nerves to the brain. The brain coordinates the response. Reflex actions are automatic and rapid. They often involve sensory, relay and motor neurones.

Q

What happens in a reflex action

A

Impulses from receptor pass along sensory neurone to central nervous system. At a synapse between sensory and relay neurone a chemical is released that causes impulse to be sent along a relay neurone. Chemical is then released between a relay and motor neurone in the central nervous system causing impulses to be sent along motor neurone to the organ (effector) that brings about the response. The effector either a muscle responds by contracting and a gland by releasing chemical substances.

Q

What do we need to control in the human body

A

Water- leaves body via lungs when breathing out and via skin when we sweat to cool. Excess water is lost via the kidneys in urine.

Ions-lost via skin when we sweat and excess ions are lost via kidneys in urine

Temperature- maintain one that enzymes work best at

Blood sugar level- provide cells with constant supply of energy
