Menstrual Cycle Flashcards
What happens in menstrual cycle a 1-5 days then at day 14
1-5 the lining of uterus breaks down. Day 14 ovulation (egg released)
What is the function of the hormone oestrogen and where it is secreted from
Oestrogen, secreted from the ovaries, inhibits FSH production and increases LH production
What controls menstrual cycle
Hormones control the menstrual cycle. (Oestrogen, progesterone, LH and FSH
What is a hormone and where are they secreted from
Hormones are chemical substances that control processes within the body. They are secreted by glands e.g pituitary gland
Function of LH in menstrual cycle
Stimulates release of an egg from ovary
How can FSH be used to control fertility
FSH given to women who want to get pregnant but having difficulty. It increases number of mature eggs, increasing chance of becoming pregnant and mature eggs can be collected for IVF
Problems using FSH for fertility treatment
FSH can lead to multiple eggs being released resulting in multiple offspring
Function of FSH and where is it secreted from
Secreted by pituitary gland, causes egg to mature and stimulates ovaries to produce oestrogen
How does contraceptive pill work
Oestrogen and progesterone are used to stop FSH production, stopping any eggs maturing, preventing pregnancy
What do light receptors contain
Nucleus, cytoplasm, and cell membrane
How is information passed through the nervous system
Information from receptors passes along cells (neurones) in nerves to the brain. The brain coordinates the response. Reflex actions are automatic and rapid. They often involve sensory, relay and motor neurones.
