DNA And Cloning Flashcards
What is a gamete and what do they carry
Gametes are sex cells such as sperm and egg which carry genetic info
What is a gene
Section of DNA, coding for the development of one characteristic
Where is DNA carried in most cells
In the nucleus
How can plants be cloned
Plants can be cloned by:
Cuttings:small section of plant is cut of and put in rooting powder. The plant is grown genetically identical to the parent
How can cells be cloned using tissue culture
Small group of cells are removed and grown in a growth medium such as agar
What is genetic engineering and how is it done
Genetic engineering is when genes of one animal are inserted into another. E.g. Human gene cut using enzymes and placed within DNA of bacterium
What is mutation and what can it lead to
A mutation is a change in DNA or characteristics. This can lead to negative change, leading to evolution
How can adult cells be cloned
Nucleus of adult cell removed, and nucleus of ovum removed. Original nucleus then inserted into ovum, resulting in clone of adult
What are GM crops and the concerns
GM crops have been genetically engineered to have the best genetic make up so resistant to specific diseases, increasing yield.
Uncertainty on human health when GM crops are consumed
Ethics of genetic engineering
Should we be playing God?
There has been no long term testing
Ethics of cloning
Same gene pool so we all are affected by disease
