The Nervous System Flashcards
What is the role of the myelin sheath?
Insulates the nerves
allows electrical impulses to transmit quickly and efficiently along the nerve cells.
How does information travel along the sensory neurone?
An electrical impulse travels along an axon, this triggers the nerve-ending of a neuron to release chemical messengers called neurotransmitters.
Receptor cells in the skin detect temperature changes in the external
environment.
Explain how this information is transmitted to the brain.
The electrical impulse travels along the sensory neurone, passes across the synapse chemically, using neurotransmitters and gets to the spinal cord, the impulse travels up the spinal cord to the brain
Explain why a person with cystic fibrosis (CF) may lose body mass.
Mucus blocks small intestine wall, preventing enzymes from being released into small intestine.
Less absorption
Less digestion of food
When the brain receives impulses from receptor cells it coordinates a response.
