Plants Flashcards
Explain the importance of the mutualistic relationship between legumes and the bacteria n their roots
Bacteria provides nitrates for the plants by nitrogen fixation (converting nitrogen into nitrates). The nitrates provide proteins for growth.
What are auxins?
A plant hormone that make some parts of a last grow faster than others
What is negative tropism?
Away from the stimulus
What is positive tropism?
Towards the stimulus
What is phototropism?
Growth in response to the direction of light
What is Hydrotropism?
Growth in response to water
What is Geotropism?
Growth in response to the direction of gravity
What is negative phototropism?
Root tip grows away from the light
What effect do auxins have on the roots and shots in relation to speed?
Speed up growth in shoots
Slows down growth in roots
What side do auxins diffuse in tip?
The shady side
Why do cells growing faster effect the way in which it grows in positive phototropism?
If cells elongate quicker on one side than the other, it will make the plant bend and grow towards the light. Like refraction, the side without auxins is slower.
What are tropisms?
Plant response to stimuli
What do the auxins do if the light is directly above the plant?
The auxins diffuse evenly, growth same speed in whole shoot
Which side do auxins diffuse in the roots in positive geotropism?
The lower side, towards the gravity(ground)
Where do auxins diffuse in the roots in positive hydrotropism?
The wetter side, towards the water
