Q

Explain the importance of the mutualistic relationship between legumes and the bacteria n their roots

A

Bacteria provides nitrates for the plants by nitrogen fixation (converting nitrogen into nitrates). The nitrates provide proteins for growth.

Q

Why do cells growing faster effect the way in which it grows in positive phototropism?

A

If cells elongate quicker on one side than the other, it will make the plant bend and grow towards the light. Like refraction, the side without auxins is slower.

Q

What do the auxins do if the light is directly above the plant?

Q

State uses for plant hormones

A

Weed killer, the concentrations will only kill weeds
Ripening fruit
Growing plants, root powder

17
Q

Describe uses of plant hormones

A

Seedless fruit production - fruit develops but not the seeds
Selective weed killer - causes excessive growth of certain weeds, causing them to die
Rooting powder - stimulates root growth, many plants can be grown from one root
Fruit ripening - fruit ripens faster

18
Q

Where is auxin produced?

A

In the tips of plants

19
Q

What do auxins do in the shoot?

A

Causes cells on the shaded side to elongate

20
Q

What do auxins do in the root?

A

Slows the growth in roots
