The Nervous System Flashcards
What is a response?
An action taken when we detect a stimulus.
What is a stimulus?
Anything in our surroundings that causes us to take action.
What are stimuli detected by?
Sense organs
Name the two parts of the nervous system
Central: brain, spinal cord
Peripheral: nerves that carry messages to cord and brain
What are nerves?
Things that carry messages around the body by means of electric impulses
What are nerves made up of?
Neurons
Name two types of Neurons
Sensory: carry messages from sense organs to brain
Motor: carry messages away from brain and to muscles
Give an example of responding to a stimulus
Pouring a cup of tea- our eyes detect when the cup is full
What is the function of the retina?
Part of the eye that detects light
Sclera?
Tough outer coating- protects the eye
Choroid layer?
Dark layer- prevents light from reflecting in the eye
Cornea?
Transparent part of sclera. Focuses light onto retina.
Iris?
Coloured part of eye, controls amount of light entering eye
Pupil?
Centre of iris, allows light into eye
Lens?
Focuses light onto retina. Changes shape depending on distance of an object.
