Heat Flashcards
What is heat measured in?
Joules
What is heat?
Heat is a form of energy.
Heat always…?
Moves from a hotter object to a cooler one.
Define conduction.
The movement of heat through a solid without the particles of the solid moving out of their fixed position.
What is a good conductor?
A substance heat can easily pass through.
What is an insulator?
A substance heat cannot pass through easily.
Give an everyday example of an insulator?
Fibre glass in attics
Feathers used in bedding
What is convection?
The movement of heat through a liquid or gas by the movement of particles of said liquid or gas .
What is radiation?
The movement of heat through a vacuum (where there are no particles at all) eg: space
Name 2 differences between heat and temperature.
Heat is energy, temperature is measuring how hot/cold something is.
Heat is measured in Joules, while temperature is measured in degrees.
What is latent heat?
The heat used to change the state of something, but not change the temperature.
What happens to solids, liquids, and gases when heated/cooled?
They expand when heated and contract when cooled.
Why is water the exception?
It expands when cooled
