The Nervous System Flashcards
Central nervous system
Brain and spinal cord
Brain
Cerebrum, cerebellum, diencephalon
Cerebrum lobes
Frontal, temporal, occipital, parietal
Frontal lobe
Language, thoughts, memory
Temporal lobe
Auditory
Occipital
Visual
Parietal
Sensory info
Cerebellum (and if damaged)
Controls motor skills/balance. If damaged problems arise in speech/motor (epilepsy)
Dicephalon
Thalamus, hypothalamus, brainstem
Thalamus
Relay nerve impulses from senses to the brain
Hypothalamus
Regulates body temperature, hunger, thirst, works with endocrine to release hormones.
Brain stem
Regulates breathing and heart rate
Peripheral nervous system ⚫️
Somatic and automatic
Somatic ⚫️
- controls skeletal system and muscles
- receives info from sensory receptors
- voluntary movement
Autonomic⚫️
- controls essential life maintaining processes such as breathing, heart rate, digestion.
- involuntary movement
Sympathetic (in autonomic)⚫️
- no adrenaline/adrenaline
- activated when a threat arises a.k.a fight or flight
Parasympathetic (in autonomic) ⚫️
- normal body functioning
- relaxes body after a threat has passed
Aka rest and digest
