The Nervous System Flashcards
The Central Nervous System
Made up of the brain and spinal cord, main use is to control the behavior an regulation of the brains physiological processes.
Provides complex processing
Nervous system
Is divided into the Central Nervous System and the Peripheral nervous system
Somatic Nervous System
Transmits sensory information from the body to the CNS.
Controls skeletal muscles for movement and is a voluntary system, under concious control.
Peripheral Nervous System
Consists of other nerves that are not part of the CNS, reaching to all the other parts of the body- they relay nerve impulses from the rest of the body to the CNS.
Autonomic Nervous System
Prepares body for homeostasis, related to motor pathways.
Two types,
involuntary system- not under concious control
Heart beating faster is an example
Sympathetic
Part of Autonomic
Increases bodys activity.
Fight or flight
heart rate increases, sweat increases, breathing increases, Inhibits digestion.
Parasympathetic
Part of the Autonomic
Decreases bodily activities.
Activates Rest and Digest.
Heart rate decreases, sewat decreases, breathing rate decreases and it stimulates digestion
Homeostasis
Regualtes the internal environment, in a normal condition this is a balance between sympathetic and parasympathetic systems
Known as maintaining homeostasis
