Localisation of functions Flashcards
Localisation of functions
Define
Refers to the idea that specific areas of the brain are responsible for different behaviours.
Motor cortext
Located in the frontal lobe, and is responsible for the voluntery movements.
Somatosensory Cortext
Found in the parietal lobe and it processes sensory information from skin
Visual cortext
Located in the opccipital lobe, it processes visual information.
Each brain hemesphire recives information from the other visual feild.
Auditory cortext
Found in temporal lobe, responsible for processing sound information and recives imput from both ears
Language centres
Brocas area- found in the frontal lobe of the Left Hemisphere- controls speech production, if this is damaged speech will be slowed and labourios.
Wernickes area- located in the temporal lobe of left Hemisphere, involved in language comprehension, if its damaged then they will lack meaning to their fluent speech.
Localisation Vs Holisitc theory
Localisitc
proposes that different functions are controlled by different areas of the brain.
Localisatiom Vs Holisitc
Holistic theory
Suggest that the funtions are not confined to specific areas but distributed across the whole brain.
Lashley(1950)- Higher cognative functions like learning are spread diffusley through the brain
Left Hemisphere of the brain
Responsible for language, logic and analytical thinking
Right Hemisphere of the brain
Involved in spatial awearness, creativity.
Evaluation
Positive
Neurosurgery proves that when damaged areas of the brain are removed it will change aspects of an individual.
If you have a lobtomy your personality might change as you have some of your frontal lobe dissapears
Evaluation
Positive- Brain scans
fMRI scans provide support for localisation by showing activity in the brain while completing specific tasks.
Evaluation
Lashleys (1950)
If other areas of the brain are damaged other areas will take over.
Rats- not about where you take them its about how much.
Case studies
Phineas gage- pole through his head lead to change in personality.
