The Endocrine System
Define
A collection of glands around the body that regulate the bodily functions, growth and psychological factors. It does this by releasing messengers called hormones into the blood stream.
Pituitary gland
Function and Hormone
Controls the release of hormones from other glands.
Hormone- Adrenocorticotropic hormone ( part of flight or fight, releases stress hormone)
Known as the master gland
Hypothalamus
Function and hormone
Links the Nervous system to the endocrine system and maintains homeostasis.
Hormone-: Corticotropin- releasing hormone
Pineal Gland
Function and Hormone
Modualtes a sleep pattern so keeps the body to a day and night rythem
Hormone- melatonin
Thyroid gland
Function and Hormone
Modulates metabolism, the rate of energy used by the body
Hormone- Thyroxine
Thymus gland
Function and Hormone
Stimulates the development of the T cells that work in the immmune system, helping with disease resistance.
Hormone- Thymosin
Active until puberty
Pancreas
Function and hormone
Regulates blood sugar levels, could lead to diabetes.
Hormone- Insulin and Glucagon
Adrenal glads
Function and Hormone
Regulates biological effects of the fight or flight response, increases heart rate, blood supply and sweat.
Hormone- Adrenaline.
Testicles or ovaries
Function and Hormone
Reproductive glad in both male and females, appear during puberty
Hormones- oestrogen (overies) Testosterone (testicles)
