The Nervous System Flashcards
The Nervous System
Based on electrical and chemical signals
Two types of NS
Central and peripheral
Central NS is made up of
The brain and spinal chord
The brain
Decision making
Spinal chord
Sends and receives info to and from the brain
Peripheral NS is made up of
Somantic and Autonomic NS
Somantic NS
Commands muscles and controls voluntary movements
Autonomic NS
Regulates involuntary processes
Autonomic NS is made up of
Sympathetic and parasypathetic NS
Sympathetic NS
Prepares body for action through arousal
Parasympathetic NS
Calms body back to homeostasis to conserve energy
What happens to the eye as a result of the autonomic NS
sympathetic: pupil dilates
parasymathetic: pupil constricts
Whats happens to the salivary gland as a result of the autonomic NS
Sympathetic: production decreases
parasympathetic: production increases
What happens to the heart as a result of the autonomic NS?
Sympathetic: rate increases
parasympathetic: rate decreases
