The Nervous System Flashcards
What does the Central Nervous System do?
Controls behaviour and regulates physiological processes
What are the two parts of the CNS?
- Brain
- Spinal cord
What does the brain do?
Provide conscious awareness and is involved in physiological processes
What does the spinal cord do?
Transfer messages to and from the brain and the rest of the body and it is responsible for simple reflexes
What does the Peripheral Nervous System do?
Transmits messages via millions of nerve cells to and from the CNS
What are the two parts of the PNS?
- Somatic Nervous System
- Autonomic Nervous System
What does the Somatic Nervous System do?
Maintains communication between the CNS and the outside world
What do sensory receptors do?
Carry information to the spinal cord and brain
What do motor pathways do?
Allow brain to control movement
What does the Autonomic Nervous System do?
Plays an important role in homeostasis and controls vital functions in the body such as breathing, heart rate, digestion etc
What are the two parts of the Autonomic Nervous System?
- Sympathetic Nervous System
- Parasympathetic Nervous System
What does the Sympathetic Nervous System do?
Preparers the body for fight or flight
What does the Parasympathetic Nervous System do?
Returns body to its ‘normal’ resting state
What does the frontal lobe do?
Important for voluntary movement, expressive language and for managing higher level executive functions
What does the parietal lobe?
Processes your sense of touch and assembles input from your other senses into a form you can use
