Localistation of Function Flashcards
What is localisation of function?
The idea that certain functions have certain locations in the brain
Where is the motor area located?
In the frontal lobe
What is the motor area responsible for?
Voluntary movements by sending signals to the muscles in the body, controls the muscles
Where is the somatosensory area located?
In the parietal lobe
What is the somatosensory area responsible for?
Receives incoming sensory information form the skin to produce sensations related to temperature, pain, pressure
Where is the visual are located?
In the occipital lobe
What is the visual area responsible for?
Receives and processes visual information, contains different parts which process different types of information
Where is the auditory lobe located?
In the temporal lobe
What is the auditory lobe responsible for?
Analysing and processing acoustic information, contains different parts, primary auditory area involved in processing features of sound
What is the Broca’s area responsible for?
Speech production
Where does the Broca’s area have a lesion to?
The left frontal lobe
What is the Wernicke’s area responsible for?
Language comprehension
Where does the Wernicke’s area have a lesion to?
The left temporal lobe
What are 2 evaluation points?
- Fail to take into account individual differences
- Biologically reductionist
