Hemispheric Lateralisation Flashcards
What is hemispheric lateralisation?
The idea that two halves of the brain are functionally different
What is the left hemisphere dominant for?
Language
What is the right hemisphere dominant for?
Visual motor task
How are the two halves connected?
Trough nerve fibres called the corpus callosum
What does the corpus callosum do?
Allows the left and right hemisphere to communicate
What is the describe what you see test?
A picture will be shown either to the lest vision field or the right vision field
What were the findings of the describe what you see test?
If a patient was shown a picture in the LVF they couldn’t describe it but if it was shown in the RVF it could be describe
What was the conclusion of ten describe what you see test?
Language is dominant in the left hemisphere
What is the tactile test?
An item is placed in the left or right hand and have to say what they felt or choose something similar
What are the findings of the tactile test?
Items placed in left hand could not describe object but could choose similar, items in right hand could describe and choose similar
What is the drawing task?
Try and draw a picture they saw with their left and right hand
What were the finding of the drawing task?
The left hand would consistently draw clearer even though they were right handed, the right hand would attempt but not as clear
What were the conclusions of the drawing task?
The right hemisphere is dominant in visual motor tasks
What are 3 evaluation points?
- Highly controlled lab research
- Very limited sample size
- Language may not be restricted to the left hemisphere
