The nervous system Flashcards
What is meant by homeostasis?
The regulation of the internal conditions or a cell or organism to maintain optimum conditions to function in response to internal and external changes
Name three things the body controls in homeostasis
Blood, glucose and water levels
What do receptors do?
Detect stimuli and convert information into an impluse
What do coordination centers do?
Receive and process information from receptors
What do effectors do?
Bring about two responses wich restore optium levels
What is a synapse
The junctions between neurons
What does CNS consist of?
The brain and spinal cord
What is the role of CNS?
To co-ordinate the response of effectors
How is information transmitted accross a synapse?
Chemicals are released which diffuse across the gap to the neuron
Why are reflex reactions important?
They protect us from Danger
What does a sensory neuron do?
Carry nerve impluses to CNS
What do motor neurons do?
Carry nerve impluses form CNS to effectors
What does CNS stand for?
Central nervous system
What does refelx arc mean?
A fast response to a stimulus
What is a neruon?
A nerve cell which carries electrical impulses
