what is an enzyme?
proteins that function as biological catalysts
what do the salivary glands do?
produce saliva containing amylase
what does the Liver do?
produces bile
what does the gallbladder do?
it’s stores bile
what does the small intestine do?
digested food is absorbed
what does the pancreas do?
produces digestive enzymes
how do you test for sugar?
add Benedict’s solution which turns brick red
how do you test for protein?
add biuret solution which turns purple
how do you test for starch?
add iodine which turns blueish black
how is the activity of enzymes affected?
by PH and temperature
what will happen if the temperature is too high or the pH is too low or high?
it will denature
what happens when an enzyme denatures
it changes shape so the substrate no longer fits the active site
where are carbohydrase made?
in salivary glands, pancreas and small intestine
where are protease made?
made in the stomach and pancreas
where are lipase made?
made in pancreas
