Genetics and evolution Flashcards
what is Archaea?
one of three domains containing primitive forms of bacteria that can live in many of the extreme environment of the world
what is classification?
the organization of living organisms into groups according to their similarities
what is a domain?
the highest level of classification
what are evolutionary trees?
models used to explain the evolutionary links between groups of organisms
what are three pieces of evidence for evolution?
observations show that characteristics pass to Offspring in genes, evidence from the fossil record, and how resistance to antibiotics evolved in bacteria
what are fossils?
the remains of organisms from millions of years ago which are found in rocks
why can scientists not be certain about how life on Earth formed?
many early forms of life was soft bodies leaving traces behind and many fossils have been destroyed
what is meant by extinction?
where there are no remaining individuals of a species still alive
name three common causes of extinction?
new diseases, new Predators, and competition for resources
what is meant by mass extinction?
when abdominally large numbers of many species become extinct in a short time
what’s might cause mass extinction?
a single catastrophic event
how do bacteria evolve rapidly?
because they reproduce at a fast rate
why can we not develop new antibodies to keep up with the emergence of resistant strains?
it’s slow and too costly
what is the binomial system?
the system by which organisms and names according to their genes and species
