What is a non-communicable disease
Diseases which are not caused by pathogens and can’t spread
Give three factors affecting non-communicable diseases
Poor diet, stress, genetics
How is coronary heart disease caused
A build up of fatty deposits in coronary arteries so blood flow is reduced and less oxygen gets to the heart muscle
What does correlation mean
There’s a clear Link Between Two variables
What is a casual mechanism
Where it can be confirmed that one variable can definitely cause another
Give the two types of tumors
Benign and malignant
Describe benign tumors
Growths of abnormal cells, contained in one area, they do not invade other parts of the body
Describe malignant tumours
Groups of abnormal cells, there cancerous, they invade neighbouring tissues
What is tar
It’s a carcinogen and can cause lung cancer
What is nicotine
The addictive substance that causes an increase in heart rate
What is the effect of carbon monoxide
Poisonous and reduces the amount of oxygen carried in the blood
What are the effects of smoking on babies
Increased risk of miscarriage, birth weight of the baby is reduced and increased risk of birth defects
What is obesity a risk factor for
Arthritis, type 2 diabetes , high blood pressure, high cholesterol and coronary heart disease
What are some effects of alcohol on the liver and brain
Slower reactions, increase risk of liver cancer, brain damage
