Physical
Name and describe three physical needs of someone with a physical disability.
1) nutrition-
* people may find it difficult to cook for or feed themselves for example restricted mobility due to a stroke
* may have difficulty swallowing and may be unlikely to eat a normal diet
2) mobility-
* may have difficulty doing everyday activities and may need assistance to do things such as walking, dressing, getting in and out of bed
3) safety-
* effects of poor mobility or blindness mean people may be more prone to slipping, tripping and hazards in their home or environment
Intellectual
Name and define three intellectual needs of someone with a physical disability.
1) stimulation-
* due to mobility issues, pain, side effects of treatment, blindness, deafness or lack of coordination
* individuals may find it difficult to find a job, hobbies or take up interests to maintain the stimulation they need
2) knowledge of illness or condition
* information about the disability, such as the short and long term effects, the treatment options available and the effects of the treatment enable the individual to be informed and feel in control
3) opportunity to learn new activities-
* may have to give up work or opportunities they enjoyed
*opportunity to learn new skills may be limited
Emotional
Name and describe three emotional needs of an individual with a physical disability.
1) sense of autonomy-
* whilst someone’s physical disabilities mean they may be unable to carry out many everyday tasks without assistance
* important individuals remain as independent as possible
2) sense of belonging-
* may loose there sense of belonging or belonging to a group , if unable to go out with friends/family , continue in their job or attend social activities
3) feeling cared for-
* need someone to listen to their worries and concerns about the effect their disability will have
Social
Name and describe three social needs and individual with a physical disability has.
1) communication-
* disability may affect the ability to communicate in their normal way, eg lose of sight or hearing
*if unable to communicate may feel lonely, frustrated, isolated and unable to voice there opinion
2) social interaction outside the family
* due to physical disability, may miss out on activities to socialise with other such as work or social and leisure activities
3) relationships with family and friends
* it may be difficult to maintain existing or form new friendships as opportunities to meet others may be limited due to poor mobility, blindness, deafness or pain
