Cystic Fibrosis Flashcards
What is cystic fibrosis?
Cystic fibrosis is an inherited disorder that causes severe damage to the lungs, digestive system and other organs in the body.
Physical effects of CF
CF causes thick mucus that clogs certain organs- lungs, pancreas, and intestines- malnutrition, poor growth, frequent respiratory infections, breathing problems, and chronic lung disease
People who suffer from cystic fibrosis need medicine such as antibiotics. Antibiotics are used regularly for lung infections.
People with CF are often small due to failure to thrive.
Intellectual impact of CF
Since patients with cystic fibrosis often are told to isolate from the public because of their vulnerability, they may take days off school- example may be at risk of covid-19
Emotional impact of CF
Anxiety is one of the most common emotional issues faced by these patients- related to daily treatments, remembering to take medications, missing out on things they want to do, and being hospitalised for periods of time.
Affects your ability to cope with psychological and emotional stress. Not only can a chronic illness make it impossible to do the things you enjoy, it can also rob you of a sense of hope for the future.
Social Impact of CF
Some people with CF may feel barriers to forming relationships, such as a lack of independence or embarrassment because of symptoms.
Individuals may not go out to socialise with others and have a limited social circle due to lack of confidence, fear of not coping, lack of mobility or the need for medical care
