The Nature Of God (Law Giver) Flashcards
What do Jews believe about the nature of God?
Jews believe that God is a law giver and gave the prophet Moses the Torah on Mount Siani. The Torah is the most holy book in the Jewish faith and forms a code of conduct for Jewish life.
Why do Jews believe in God as a law giver?
God as a law giver can be seen in Exodus 20 when the 10 commandments were given to Moses on Mount Sinai. For example “remember the sabbath day by keeping it holy”
How do Jews remember God as a law giver?
In particular Orthodox Jews try and follow as many mitvot as they can as they believe by obeying God’s laws and commands they are fulfilling God’s will on Earth and form a closer relationship with him.
What do Orthodox Jews believe about keeping mitzvot?
•they believe that it forms part of a covenant God had with Abraham agreed on Mount Sinai when he gave him the 10 commandments
•They believe that it teaches Jews how to live their lives e.g. “remember the sabbath day and keep it holy.
•They believe that following God’s word mean that they fulfil God’s will on Earth and means they can form a stronger relationship with him
•they see God as a judge and believe he will judge them on how well they have been keeping mitzvot
What do Reform Jews believe about keeping mitzvot?
-: Reform Jews value individual autonomy and believe that individuals should have the freedom to interpret and practice Judaism in ways that are meaningful to them. For example they may follow mitzvot they think is essential such as “do not kill” but not others such as to offer “burnt offerings” as this may not resonate with them
-They also believe that as some mitzvot is not possible to follow e.g mitzvot with correlation to the temple, that Jews should adapt mitzvot to modern ages.
