what is a near place
an area geographically near to where a person lives.
they are likely to feel like an insider in near places
what is a far place
an area geographically distant form where a person lives.
they are more likely to feel like and outsider here
what is an experienced place
places a person has spent time in. when they visit there experience shapes their sense of that place
what is a media place
places a person has not been to but have created a sense of place based on the areas depiction in the media
what are endogenous factors
internal factors which shape a places character
physical: location, topography and physical geology
human: land use, infrastructure, demographic, economic characteristics
what is exogenous factor
an external factor which shapes a places character
relationships with other places:
flow of people(migration)
flow of ideas, resources and money (investments)
how do different groups influence our sense of place
governments: may try to attract people or investments to a particular place
corporate bodies: may do this to generate a profit or for a specific purpose
e. g. visitbritain is an agency set up to promote tourism
- feed into the tourist gaze
community groups: may do this to change the perception of their place to improve the local economy or lives of locals
e.g. Ludlow business owners promote the town by organising a food festival each year
strategies to alter perception of place
place marketing: how a place is sold to potential tourists and investors using marketing companies
e.g. lake district was promoted as the adventure capitol across social media
reimaging: changing existing negative perceptions about a place
e. g. old industrial areas in Birmingham turned into new developments
rebranding: giving a place a new identity through reimaging, place marketing and regeneration schemes.
