The Muscular System Flashcards
Name the 3 types of muscles
Cardiac, smooth, and skeletal
What encloses muscles?
Fascia
Describe skeletal muscle
Striated muscles that function due to voluntary movement. Attatched to the bones.
Describe smooth muscle
Found within or around internal organ. Distinct due to involuntary movement
Describe cardiac muscle
Muscle found in the myocardium. Looks similar to skeletal muscle but functions involuntary.
Function of skeletal muscle
Providing and preventing movement (working against gravity in both ways)
Taking the strain of the joints
Allowing the opening and closing of structures
Providing heat for homeostasis
Function of the smooth muscle
Assisting organs in properly functionining
Function of cardiac muscle
To pump blood in and out of the heart
Describe the structure of the cardiac muscle
Organized into sacromers that contain fibers connected to eachother with intercalated discs.
Describe the nomenclatures of muscles
defined by divisions (bicep and tricep), size (maximus and minimus), shape (deltoid), and action/
