The Movement ABC Flashcards
What is the purpose of the MABC?
Developed to identify and describe impairments of motor function in children 4-12
One of the most widely used tools by OT, PT, psychologists and education pros
Used with a wide range of disabilities: ASD, ADHD, learning disability, DCD, intellectual impairments
General Overview of the MABC
Performance Test
32 items split into 4 sets of 8
Each set is a different age band
Each set includes 3 major categories: manual dexterity, ball skills, static and dynamic balance
Tasks increase in difficulty
Total score across all 8 items provides an estimate of movement competency
What is the Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency?
Example test:
run 5m, collect a box of matches, take out 4, form a square, fold a sheet of paper and return to the start
What is the Test of Motor Impairment (TOMI)?
45 items organised into 9 sets with 5 items per set
Major categories: manual dexterity, ball skills, static and dynamic balance
What is criteria for the TOMI?
Be easy to administer
Be simple to score
Involve simple equipment, easy to assemble and easy to carry
Be appropriate for the age range tested
Be equally familiar to boys and girls
Involve no risk of physical injury to the child
Require minimal verbal comprehension and memory from the child
Be as fair as possible, equally relevant to all cultural backgrounds
What is different about the MABC 1992?
Based directly off the TOMI
Additions: importance placed on qualitative observation
Revisions: decreased the number of items to 32; clarified instructions and scoring procedures
What are the set up and task instructions?
Set-up: directions for arranging the test materials before the child begins the test
Task: the precise form of the task that the child’s required to complete is described. The start and finish of continuous tasks are specified, any special properties of the task are clearly indicated
What are the demonstration and practice phase instructions?
Demonstration: physical demonstration of all tasks is recommended in order to overcome any difficulty the child has in understanding verbal instructions
Practice Phase: the amount of practice recommended for each task is given. It is the tester’s job to help the child learn the task as quickly as possible. For this reason, correction should be given as soon as possible when the child starts using an incorrect procedure
What are formal trial instructions?
After the practice trials the child is given on or more opportunites to complete the task to the best of their ability. The number of trials depends on the task.
What are the recording scores instructions?
exact detail of what to enter on the recording form on provided. First the data obtained from a good attempt are specified
If the child does not start or complete a task the reason for this should be stated using the following explanations:
- Failed attempt (F) - score of 5
- Inappropriate (I) no score
- Refusal (R) no score
What are the overall score instructions
Add up the scores from all 8 tasks per age band. compare total scores to the age-appropriate norms
5th-15th percentile points for the MABC
complete percentile norms for the MABC
