When was the Mormon Migration?
1846 - 1847
Who was the leader of the Mormans? And who took over?
Joseph Smith was the founder and Brigham Young took over in 1846 after his death.
What was the Morman’s ideal land?
‘The Promised Land’, A land of freedom for the Mormans where they won’t be prosecuted in the East for their beliefs.
What were the Morman’s beliefs?
- They believed in polygamy (more than 1 wife).
- Anti slavery.
What was the Morman’s Promised land?
Salt Lake Valley in the west.
What was the Winter Quarters? When was it built?
Built in 1846, Brigham Y built this in Omaha to avoid travelling in the winter.
Thousands of Mormans safely stayed there.
What was the journey of the Mormans? How did they plan it out?
In Spring 1847, Brigham lead an advanced party of 150 to plot the way.
- Chose the tested route of the Oregon trail.
- Planted crops
- Signposted the trail.
- Highlighted water sources.
- Made resting places.
Each group had a leader, enough food, equipment and skilled men to ensure success in crossing the trail.
When did the advance party arrive in SLV? What did they begin to do?
They arrived in July 1847, and began to set up the new Morman Settlement (Salt Lake City).
When did the journey finally end?
Between 1847 and 1869, by 1869 70,000 Mormans had crossed the Morman trail to the west. It was a complete success.
