The Mole Flashcards
How can amount of substance be measured?
Amount of substance can be measured using a unit called the mole (mol for short)
How many particles does 1 mole contain?
6.02 x 10^23 particles - this number is known as Avogadro’s constant
You can use Avogadro’s constant to convert between what?
Number of particles and number of moles
Write an equation for using Avogadro’s constant to convert between number of particles and number of moles
Number of particles = number of moles x Avogadro’s constant
What does 1 mole of any substance have a mass of?
1 mole of any substance has a mass that’s the same as its relative molecular mass (Mr) in grams
What is the formula for working out number of moles?
Number of moles = mass of substance / Mr
What is the concentration of a solution?
The concentration of a solution is how many moles are dissolved per 1dm3
What are the units of concentration?
mol dm-3
How do you work out number of moles using concentration?
Number of moles = concentration x volume
What is the ideal gas equation?
The ideal gas equation lets you find the number of moles in a certain volume of gas
What is the equation for the ideal gas equation?
pV = nRT … where,
p = pressure (Pa) v = volume (m3) n = number of moles R = 8.31 J K-1 mol-1 T = temperature (K)
