the modern periodic table Flashcards
how is the periodic table organised?
in order of increasing atomic number
where are metals and non-metals found?
metals to the left, non-metals to the right
vertical columns
groups
rows
periods
what do the periods represent?
another full shell of electrons, same number of energy levels
what does the group number tell you?
the number of electrons on the outer shell, same number of outer electrons
what is the trend in each group?
they all have similar properties as they have the same number of outer electrons
what is the atomic number?
the number of protons in an atom
what is the atomic mass?
the total number of protons and neutrons
which number is on top?
relative atomic mass
which energy level do electrons occupy?
the lowest available
valence electron
the outermost electron
what happens to the size of the atom as you go down the column?
it increases by gaining another shell
why is the periodic table called periodic?
similar properties occur over regular intervals
