RP making salts Flashcards
1
Q
method
A
- measure 20 cm³ sulfuric acid into a measuring cylinder and pour into a beaker
- heat gently using a bunsen burner
- add small amounts of copper oxide in excess until no more reacts/no more effervescence
- filter the solution using filter paper and a funnel
- pour solution into evaporating basin
- heat over a bunsen burner until crystals start to form
- leave basin in a cool place for 24 hours
- gently pat dry
2
Q
safety
A
-sulfuric acid is corrosive so wear goggles
-hair tied back (bunsen burner)
-when bunsen burner not in use leave in safety flame or turn off
3
Q
balanced symbol equation for reaction
A
CuO + H₂SO₄ —-> CuSO₄ + H₂O
4
Q
two methods to separate mixtures used
A
filtration, crystallisation
5
Q
why is the acid heated?
A
to ensure all the acid reacts with the copper oxide
6
Q
why is copper oxide added in excess?
A
to ensure all the acid reacts, so it isn’t the limiting reactant
