metals and non-metals Flashcards
what type of ions do metals form?
positive
what type of ions do non-metals form?
negative
what are the three ways atoms gain a full shell?
by gaining, losing or sharing electrons
why is it easier for metals closer to the left and bottom of the table to become an ion?
metals to the left don’t have many electrons to lose, and metals towards the bottom have outer electrons which are far away from the nucleus so feel a weaker attraction
metals v non-metals: colour
metals typically silver, non-metals any colour
metals v non-metals: conductivity
metals-all are electrical and thermal conductors
non-metals-aren’t conductors other than graphite so are insulators
metals v non-metals: bp/mp
metals have a high bp/mp, non-metals have a low bp/mp
metals v non-metals: luster
metals-shiny
non-metals-dull
metals v non-metals: malleability
metals-malleable with heat, hammered into shape
non-metals-most not malleable, brittle
metals v non-metals: density
metals-high density
non-metals-low density
metals v non-metals: oxides
metals-basic
non-metals-acidic
