The Memory System (Baddeley And Hitch) Flashcards
The memory system
Forms an integral part of the processing of info
Contains a series of memory stores
What is the central executive?
Has overall control over info entering and leaving the working memory
Quickly identifies which info should be sent to which sub memory system
Three sub systems
The phonological loop
The visuospatial sketchpad
The episodic buffer
The phonological loop
Function is to deal with auditory info presented from senses
Contains phonological store and articulatory system that helps produce a memory trace (initial mental idea of skill)
Sent to LTM, triggers motor programme /images that contain components of a skill so it can produce movement
Phonological loop example
Coach’s instructions
Call of a teammate
Sound of ball on bat
^all processed by the phonological loop
The visuospatial sketchpad
Concerns visual and spatial info
Helps process info about feel of movement
Holds info about what we see
Visuospatial sketchpad is further divided into 2 sections :
Visual cache (info about form and colour)
Inner scribe (spatial and movement info)
The episodic buffer is responsible for :
coordinating work of phonological loop and visuospatial sketchpad into sequences to be sent to LTM
What does the episodic buffer do?
Produces integrated sequences of sight, sound and movements which can be sent to LTM
These sequences produce patterns of skill actions that are put in order and sent to LTM
This is starting point for initiation of motor programmes, which are patterns of the whole skill (used to produce movement
Working memory and LTM
How does it work together to help sport performers?
Working memory produces memory trace and sends it to LTM so it can be compared in storage area that’s already in LTM
LTM can send info back to working memory for use in current sporting action
Memories work together in two way process which helps sport performers compare info and make decisions
