To interpret the Bible and The Apostolic Tradition for the life of Catholics in the modern world

What is the meaning of the Magisterium?
A
- The latin word Magisterium translates to “Teaching Authority”
- The Pope and Bishops safeguard the Church’s teachings and are considered the successors of the apostles. This is known as Apostolic Succession.

What is the importance of the Magisterium?
A
- Has supreme authority because it is guided by the Pope and the Holy Spirit (infallible)
- Helps Catholics with issues that were not in the Bible (euthanasia, gay marriage etc.)
- Keeps the Catholic Church up to date by dealing with modern day issues
- Provides clear guidelines on how to behave and what to believe
- Correct teachings help Catholics live by the truth

- Comes from a meeting made up of bishops (ecumenical council) where they look at questions facing the church
- The laity will learn the teachings
- Ordinary Magisterium

- Comes from the Pope when he speaks ex cathedra. His teachings are infallible
- Extraordinary Magisterium
