What are sacred vessels?
Paten

-most sacred as they’re used for bread and wine (body and blood in sacramental form)
What is a stoup?
- A holy water container
- Placed on the wall near the entrance
- Reminder of baptism and sin being washed away
What is a ciborium?
A gold or silver container that holds the people’s hosts
What is a paten?
- A gold or silver plate that holds the priests host
- Used during the consecration of the host
What is a chalice?
A gold or silver cup that holds the wine that is going to be consecrated
Why are sacred vessels important?
- Gold or silver are used to show something sacred is happening
- Form an important part of the Liturgy of the Eucharist
- Help Catholics focus on their devotion
What are vetements?
The colour if the cloths on the lectern and altar reflect the Church seasons throughout the year
- White/Gold

What does white/gold represent?
- Shows holiness, glory or joy
- Worn for special occasions
- Christmas
- Easter
What does green represent?
- Shows creation
- Used for ordinary time when there are no special occasions
What does purple represent?
- Shows sorrow and penitence
- Worn during Advent and Lent
What does red represent?
- Shows blood that is shed
- Worn during event involving martyrs
- Good Friday
- Pentecost to symbolise the fire of the Holy Spirit
What does the Catechism say?
“All the signs in the liturgical celebrations are related to Christ”
This means that sacred objects are important in the Catholic worship
What are sarcophagi?
- A sarcophagus is a stone container for a corpse/bones
- Found in older churches and monasteries
- Often decorated with various symbols and scenes from the persons life or Jesus raising people from the dead
What are hunger cloths?
- Used during the Middle Ages to cover the altar during Lent
- Covered with Bible stories to help people (who couldn’t read learn) about God
- Themed towards justice and peace for people in the world
- Produces by charities
- Reminds people of Christ’s suffering and love for them
- Gives a message of hope to those who suffer
