The Lymphoid System Flashcards
Primary Lymphoid Organs
Bone Marrow
Thymus
It can be considered the largest tissue of the body, with a total weight of 1300 to 1500g in adult
Bone Marrow
Site where most blood cells mature including B cells and NK cells.
Bone Marrow
a small, flat, bilobed organ found in the thorax, or chest cavity, right below the thyroid gland and overlying the heart
Thymus
Site where T cells mature and develop their identifying characteristics.
Thymus
Not fully mature T cells = resides in the
Cortex
Mature T cells = resides in the
medulla and then released
Secondary Lymphoid Organs
Spleen
Lymph Nodes
act as the site for antigen-dependent lymphopoiesis
secondary lymphoid organs
makes up more than one half of the total volume of the splenic tissue, and its function is to destroy RBCs
Red pulp
Main type of spleen that contains lymphoid tissue
White pulp
In the spleen, Contains mainly T cells
PALS (periarteriolar lymphoid sheaths)
contains naïve B cells
Primary follicles
In the white pulp of the spleen it contains dendritic cells
Marginal zone
are located along lymphatic ducts and serve as central collecting points for lymph fluid from adjacent tissues.
Lymph nodes
act as lymphoid filters in the lymphatic system.
Lymph Nodes
respond to antigens introduced distally and routed to them by afferent lymphatics
Lymph Nodes
contains macrophages, follicular dendritic cells, naïve or resting B cells (in primary follicle), proliferating B cells and plasma cells (in 2ndary follicles or Germinal centers)
Cortex
Layer of lymph node that contains mainly T cells
Paracortex
Layer of the lymph node that contains T cells, B cells, plasma cells, and macrophages
Medulla
The ___ populate the following:
- Perifollicular and paracortical regions of the lymph nodes
- Medullary cords of the lymph nodes
- Periarteriolar regions of the spleen
- Thoracic duct of the circulatory system
T lymphocytes or T cells
The ______ multiply and populate the following:
- Follicular and medullary (germinal centers) of the lymph nodes
- Primary follicles and red pulp of the spleen
- Follicular regions of GALT
- Medullary cords of the lymph nodes
B lymphocytes or B cells
