The lymphatic system Flashcards
What is the function of the spleen?
it fights invading germs in the blood, controls the white blood cells, red blood cells and platelet levels
What is the function of the lymphatic vessels?
collect and filter lymph as it moves towards larger vessels (transport lymph)
What is lymph?
Part of the circulatory system
Returns leaked capillary fluid to the circulating blood
This fluid is called lymph, it contains lymphocytes
Network of vessels, tissues and organs
Gets rid of toxins to fight infection
List key structures of the lymphatic system
Spleen
Lymphatic vessels
Lymph nodes
Bone marrow
Thymus gland
Thoracic duct
What is the function of lymph nodes?
clean up and get rid of lymphatic fluid, waste and invaders that cause illness
What is the function of the thoracic duct?
transports lymph back to the circulatory system
What is the function of the Thymus gland?
to train special white blood cells called T-cells
What is the function of the bone marrow?
Manufactures bone marrow stem cells and in turn produce blood cells
