The Heart Flashcards
the cardiac cycle, blood and its components and the circulatory system
What is the function of an artery?
Carries oxygenated blood at higher pressures from heart to parts of the body
What is the function of veins?
Carries deoxygenated blood at lower pressures from body back to heart
Explain the structure of the capillaries
Has thin walls that allow exchange of compounds such as nutrients, glucose, oxygen and co2 between blood and tissues
How many chambers in the heart do mammals and birds have?
4 chambers
State the 2 types of chambers
The Atria
The Ventricles
Explain the structure of the Aorta
Largest artery
Very elastic and thick as it withstands large pressures
What 3 things make up the Circulatory System?
The Heart
Blood
Blood Vessels
What type of circulatory system do mammals and birds have?
Double circulatory system
What type of circulatory system do fish have?
Single circulatory system
What is a baroreceptor?
Baroreceptors detect changes in the pressure of blood filling the atria
What is the CNS?
Central Nervous System
What is the function of the Pulmonary Circuit?
Carries blood to the lungs to be oxygenated and then back to the heart
What is the function of the Systemic Circuit?
Carries oxygenated blood from the heart to the rest of the body
What is the function of Heart Valves?
Open and close to allow blood to flow due to pressure changes within the chambers
Important in preventing backflow of blood
What is the function of the Aorta?
Carries oxygenated blood away from the heart
What is the Vena Cava made up of?
Superior and Inferior Vena Cava
What is the function of the Vena Cava?
To transport deoxygenated blood to the heart
What is the function of the Purkinje Fibres?
The impulse from the bundle of His reaches the fibres they cause the ventricles to contract
What is the systole?
The contraction phase, this is when the blood pressure rises
What is the diastole?
The relaxation phase, during this stage, blood pressure is at its lowest
What is blood made up of?
White blood cells, red blood cells, oxygen, platelets, haemoglobin, water, lymphocytes, erythrocytes, leukocytes and plasma
What is the function of the white blood cell?
To fight infection
How are the red blood cells adapted?
They have a concave shape and no nucleus which allows the cell to hold more oxygen
