The Lower Cource Of A River Flashcards
Characteristics of a lower river are
river is much wider
# rivers deeper
# valley floor is flat
# valley floor is wide
# the river meanders
The main process occurring here is deposition
Why is this the main process and not erosion
A river in its lower course has lost a lot of its energy to erode
Land forms
Most features in the lower course are produced by deposition.
A flood plain
This is the area of land which the river flows over and is very flat . During times of flood a river will over flow it’s banks and cover the surrounding land
Flood plains
Each time the river floods a thin layer of material called silt is spread over the floodplain
Larger material is deposited along the banks of the river- larger particles dropped first as the water doesn’t have enough energy to carry them
Levees
A natural embankment of deposited material. Sometimes strengthened to protect the surrounding area from floods
