The living world Flashcards
Questions on animals, plants, life cycles and evolution.
Why do animals have different teeth?
Carnivores have sharp teeth to slice and rip the meat they eat.
Herbivores have flat teeth which squash and grind the plants they eat.
What does a plant need to survive?
Air, light, warmth, water and nutrients.
Why are bees so important?
Bees pollinate plants which allows them to reproduce.
Without bees, the food chain would be disrupted and we would have very little food left to eat.
Why are plants so important?
They absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen from their leaves.
Without plants, there would be less oxygen for humans and other animals to breath.
Plants are also important to the food chain. Some animals would not be able to survive without plants to eat.
What is fertiliser?
Fertiliser contains nutrients that plants need to grow.
It can be organic (poo) or synthetic (human-made).
Fertiliser makes plants grow big and strong.
What is a microorganism?
Tiny organisms also known as “germs”. Some germs are dangerous to humans and can make us unwell. It is important to maintain good hygiene to kill harmful germs before they can get into our bodies.
What is a life cycle?
The process of being born, growing older, potentially reproducing, and eventually dying.
How do animals reproduce?
Animals require a male and female to reproduce.
Some animals create offspring by laying eggs, some animals produce offspring by growing babies inside them until they are old enough to be born.
What are the 6 stages of a human life cycle?
- Foetus
- Baby
- Childhood
- Adolescence
- Adulthood
- Old age
How does a plant reproduce sexually?
The pollen from one plant fertilises the egg of another.
How does a plant reproduce asexually?
One plant produces offspring on its own which are exact copies of one another.
What is the life cycle of a plant?
- Germination - the plant grows from a seed
- Pollination - pollen from a flower is carried by insects or blown in the wind to another flower
- Fertilisation - the pollen fertilises egg cells and makes seeds
- Dispersal - seeds are scattered by animals or in the wind, some will grow into new plants
How do seeds disperse?
Seeds are often specially shaped or designed to be dispersed in a particular way.
Some seeds are shaped to float through the air with the wind.
Some seeds are shaped like hooks so they can attach to animal fur and be carried.
What are the components of a food chain?
Producer - plants that only require sunlight as food using photosynthesis
Consumer - an animal that eats plants or other animals to survive
What is an ecosystem?
A community of animals, plants and microorganisms, alongside their habitat.
Ecosystems are often fragile and changing one part of it can impact the rest.
