The Living Cell Flashcards
Generally what is the structure of a cell?
sacs of fluid reinforced by proteins surrounded by membranes.
What are Cells?
the smallest units of living organisms
What are organelles?
organelles are cell structures used during metabolic processes.(non-living)
How can cells be organized?
By structure and function.
Do prokaryotes have true nucleus or organelles?
No.
What types of organisms are prokaryotes?
Bacteria and Archaea.
Do Eukaryotes have a nucleus?
Yes.
What is is the Nucleus of Eukaryote?
Genetic material.
What types of organisms are eukaryotes?
Animals
Plants
Algae
Fungi
What are five uses for Bacteria?
- food production: yogurt and cheese
- cleaning: eat oils and sewage
- prevention: normal levels prevent disease
- recyling: release nutrients from decaying matter
- growing plants: pull nitrogen from the air
What are some physical characteristics of Prokaryotes?
Plasma membrane around the cell with a rigid cell wall around the membrane.
Where is the DNA found in Prokaryotes?
In the Nucleoids.
What makes proteins in Prokaryotes and where are they made?
Ribosomes; Cytoplasm.
How do Prokaryotes break down food?
Cellular respiration and fermentation (no oxygen required).
What is the structure of eukaryotic cells?
Nucleus containing genetic information.
plasma membrane enclosing the cell.
internal membranes forming compartments (ER and Golgi App.).
a cytoskeleton reinforcing the cell and controlling movement.
mitochondria converting food into usable energy.
