- Italy had previously been defeated in 1896 and the Italians wanted revenge
- Mussolini dreamed of recreating the roman empire again
- Abyssinia was rich in natural resources

A
- in October 1925 Mussolini send troops with heavy artillery and tanks to invade Abyssinia
- the Abyssinian leader haille Selassie appealed directly to the league
- the league imposed economic sanctions however, took a while to ban oil exports in case the USA didn’t support them
- Britain and france didn’t close the Suez canal to italian ships so supplies still went through
- by may 1936 italy had conquered all of abbysinia

- the league didn’t want to lose Italy as an ally, especially with Hitler on the rise
- Britain and france signed a secret agreement
- the hoare laval pact- that agreed to give abyssinia to Italy
- Italy became very confident and even started to make agreements with Hitler
- league’s repuatation was ruined, league was falling apart as no one wanted to work together to prevent aggression
