- the league was too busy with mussolini and Abyssinia
- France and USSR made a pact in case Germany decided to attack them – Hitler claimed this made him feel threatened so he needed to remilitarise his borders
- the german forces were told to retreat if the French army made a move against them
- France was in the middle of an election campaign and was too busy
- league and Britain took no action

- anschluss allowed hitler to make use of austrias armed forces and raw materials
- hitler encouraged austiran nazis to protest in favour of anschluss
- the austrian chancellor schuschnigg hoped to prevent the nazis from taking over
- hitler threatened to invade if he didnt resign
- in 1938 schuschnigg resigned
- on 12 march 1938 hitler invaded austria to gain further lebensraum and achieve anschluss
- following appeasement britain didnt intervene
- in april a plebiscite was held and austrians voted in favour for the anchluss
- however the votes were rigged by the nazis
how did Hitler put pressure on Czechoslovakia in 1938
- the sudetanland was part of Czechoslovakia and had about 3 million Germans living in it
- Hitler said that the Czechoslovakia government was discriminating against the Germans in the sudetanland
- nazis demanded it should be theirs
- in May 1938 Hitler moved his armies to the border of Czechoslovakia and threatened to go to war
- Hitler wanted to take control of the sudetanland
- the allies + USSR agreed to help support Czechoslovakia in case a war broke out
- Hitler promised Chamberlain he wouldn’t invade Czechoslovakia

- chamberlain wanted to avoid war and thought he could negotiate with hitler in 1938
- on 15th september chamberlain visits hitler to negotiate and hitler says this is his last request in europe
- 22 september chamberlain tells hitler that the sudetanland will be given to him
- hitler changes his mind and says he wants all non germans to leave the area
- chamberlain disagrees and prepares for war
- on 29th september hitler invites france, britain and italy to munich and talk upon the munich agreement

- the sudetanland will be given to Germany but Hitler guaranteed he would not invade Czechoslovakia
what was the reaction to the munich agreement
- chamberlain gave in as he believed hitler was being honest
- seemed like chamberlain prevented war as he proclaimed it showed ‘ peace for our time’
- czechoslovakia and the USSR weren’t invited so this made them very annoyed and worried about hitlers possible intentions
