The Influence Of Early Attachment Flashcards
The role of the internal working model:
The infant learns about a relationship from experience, learning how partners should behave towards each other in a relationship and thus used to predict the behaviours of others in the future (schema)
Hazan and Shaver (1987)
Procedure
formed the ‘Love Quiz’ which asked questions about current and past attachment experiences in order to identify their childhood attachment types. They analysed 205 responses from men and 415 from women
Hazan and Shaver (1987):
Findings
they found that current attachment types were the same as nose in infancy - 56%secure 25% avoidant and 19% resistant. They also found a positive correlation between attachment types and love experiences with those securely attached having relationships that were happy and trusting lasting 10yrs compared to 6yrs for resistant and avoidant
Behaviours influenced by the internal working model:
Childhood friendships -
Individuals classified as securely attached in infancy were highest rated for social competence in childhood and were more popular
Behaviours influenced but the internal working model:
Poor parenting -
The lack of an internal working model means that individuals lack a reference point to form subsequent relationships and thus have difficulties in parenting
Behaviours influenced but the internal working model:
Romantic relationships -
Those who are securely attached have longer-lasting happy relationships
Behaviours influenced but the internal working model:
Mental health -
The lack of an attachment in the critical period would result in the lack of an IWM and thus have an inability to interact and relate to others
