- There was a rivalry between France and Germany after France had lost the war to Germany in 1871
- This rivalry encouraged the two scientists to work harder in order to glorify their countries
How did the war affect the development and production of penicillin?
When Fleming first discovered penicillin he could not develop his theory further because he could not get funding. However, during WWII, there was a great need for a drug that would prevent soldiers from dying after being injured. Therefore, Florey and Chain were given the funding to develop penicillin because there was an important reason to develop it.
How did WWII help change attitudes towards healthcare?
- During the war, people were offered free health care to keep them healthy for the war effort- this increased people’s sense of entitlement
- Richer families than the working class were appalled at the conditions of some of the evacuees of the city.
- They believed that medical treatment and better health care should be available to everyone
