Louis Pasteur Flashcards
1
Q
Who was Louis Pasteur?
A
A chemist who worked in France.
2
Q
How did Pasteur develop the Germ Theory?
A
- In the 1850s he was asked by wine producers to find out why their alcohol went sour.
- He used a microscope to discover microorganisms were making the alcohol sour.
- He discovered that if any liquid was heated , the germs would be killed (pasteurisation).
- He invented the ‘S’ shaped glass to stop air and dust from getting to the alcohol. He then realised that germs must be in the dust.
- He then proved that germs caused illness and disease in humans.
3
Q
When did he publish the Germ Theory?
A
1861 and it was proved in 1864
4
Q
What else did Pasteur discover?
A
- Developed chicken cholera vaccine in 1879
- Using microbes identified by Koch, he developed a vaccine for anthrax
- He realised that Jenner was correct but he still could not explain it.
- He also realised that using weak forms of the disease prevented the disease from occurring again.
5
Q
What did Pasteur discover?
A
That germs caused disease and therefore disproved the theory of spontaneous generation.
6
Q
In what time period did Pasteur make his discovery?
A
Industrial
