What was Hippocrates’ key idea?
The Theory of The Four Humours
What was the theory of the four humours?
The theory that there are four liquids in the body and if one of them became imbalanced then the person would become ill.
What else did Hippocrates believe?
He rejected supernatural theories and believed that regimen would prevent illness and disease.
What were Hippocrates clinical observations?
Diagnosis, prognosis and observation.
What did Hippocrates do?
He did not treat patients but observed the progress of the illness or disease. He kept records of illnesses and passed them onto other doctors.
What was the Hippocratic Corpus?
A collection of books that was written by Hippocrates’ followers and other doctors based upon Hippocrates’ observations and ideas.
What was the significance of the Hippocratic Corpus?
It was the first detailed list of symptoms and treatments.
What were the long term effects of Hippocrates’ work?
- Doctors used the Hippocratic Corpus for centuries aft his death
- He led the way for other doctors, especially Galen
