  • They funded public works to promote good public health. They thought healthy citizens were less likely to rebel and healthy workers and merchants were important for a prosperous empire.

What did the government of the early Middle Ages do?

A
  • Kings and their advisers had little interest in medicine. They were more interested in defending the kingdom and did not realise healthy subjects would help with this.
  • The lack of interest had a negative effect on public health- public baths fell into disrepair for example.
